Portrait of a Lady

Portrait of a Lady, 1780s

The subject of the painting is a young woman in a white dress with a chalk or charcoal holder in her right hand and leaning on her sketch with her left. She is anonymous but it is interesting to speculate that she might be one of the artist’s daughters, Ann or Maria, as there is a resemblance to other portraits of his daughters that he produced.
